VBites Cheezly does not use any products from cows or other dairy animals that emit large amounts of methane, which is approximately 25 times more damaging to our planet than CO2. There are approximately 270 million dairy cows in the world. The animals in the dairy industry are given feed that contributes to global warming, and their waste degrades local water resources.     Food waste is a huge burden on the environment. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. And if food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. With this in mind, many years ago, we took the decision to increase the produce shelf life from the industry standard 10 – 15 days in the easy peel packaging to a staggering 50 days from production. To achieve this, we have to pack in a naturally modified atmosphere and weld seal. Although it may be frustrating to open, we are reducing waste, as any product out of date goes in the bin. The current packaging is also designed to be freezer-friendly, which also enables our customers to reduce food waste. Despite this, we are looking at working with suppliers to reduce stock levels, which, in turn, helps us look at alternative shorter shelf-life products that are far easier to open. The base tray is recyclable, and we are actually investigating a plant fibre base—very exciting times.
